Officially our rule for this cycling tour is no sightseeing (done plenty of that in Asia) but there was no way we were going to leave Esztergom without visiting the huge imposing 18th century Basilica which overlooks the town. In Rome you might not blink an eyelid as the city centre is full of these kind of monuments. Here it comes as a big surprise when you arrive cycling along the Danube and suddenly this huge thing appears out of nowhere. The views from the Basilica are great too...Hungary on our side, Slovakia on the other side and the peaceful Danube in between.
Back on the saddle we cycled past some small industrial estates and then decided to take a detour up into the hills and the lakeside town of Tata. The steep climb took us past vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc and more great views of the Danube...to my utter surprise we did not stop for the winetasting at Hilltop winery but opted to pedal some more (and drink water instead). Once in Tata we could not resist trying a little Robin Hood archery next to the castle...I think we need a little more practice! The evening obviously included drinking some of that fine dry white wine we had missed out earlier in the day.
Ooooh and we witnessed some beautiful thunder and lightning from a nearby cumulonimbus cloud...glad we had finished the cycling for the day!
Stats for Day 16:
Cycled 54.7 km.
Time: 3 hrs 40 min.
Max speed: 41 km/h.
Avg speed: 14.9 km/h.
Wildlife: nothing remarkable!
