Day 276-278: Photo sketches fom Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

A very impressive city if you like the bizarre...most buildings are made of white marble with gold fittings; there are colourful fountains everywhere and some statues look more like enormous soviet space rockets. A weird architectural mix that reminded us of North Korea (old russian buildings waiting to be knocked down), Vegas and Dubai...The army is very much present on the street trying to catch the naughty tourist trying to take pictures of the parliament (guess who got questioned..) and few people walk along the pavements. A completely contrast to the other big cities we have seen in Central Asia. A city made to impress even if at a glance it appears to have little character. The sunsets are however some of the best we have seen for months! www.stephieandraigoasia.blogspot.com
