The citadel represents the heart of the city of Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. People have been living in the citadel for the last 8000 years up to 2006. UNESCO and the Kurdistan government are currently renovating it so visitors are not allowed beyond the main street. We sneaked behind the army guards and took a nice long walk through the citadel which covers an area of more than 100,000 sq metres.....naughty Rai and Stephie....amazing labyrinth of alleyways and ancient houses!
